Food Storage

A few months ago I was educating myself on plastics- what is in them and the health risks associated. I started to have a mini panic attack over how naive I was about food storage. Everything (so it seemed) came in a plastic container, and I had an entire cabinet of Glad storage containers. So, I debated on giving them all away or putting them in the recycling. Giving them away kind of seemed like passing my problem on to another- if I decided to stop using them for my family why would it be okay to let others... Anyways, I ended up giving them to my mother-in-law. I was weary and told her how bothered I was over plastics and foods and she understood my stance but uses them to freeze leftovers and she is aware of the concerns- so I don't feel so bad about passing them on. In my opinion it isn't a huge deal to use plastics but there are other options so why not explore those???

I have switched food storage to pyrex glass bowls. I really like how I can use them to refrigerate, freeze, microwave, and bake food in! I also got some glass bowls and lids from the pampered chef.

This company has sparked my interest and I feel anxious to try some of their products-Abeego.

There are also many many many sellers on Etsy that sell handmade reusable lunch sacks. It saves trash output, supports small businesses, and is safer for foods than plastic ziplocs.

I do have a set of plastic dish ware for the littles from Ikea but I checked on SafeMama to make sure the set is BPA and PVC free (it is!). I really like the set because of how colorful it is and the littles like to talk about who is eating off which color :) We do use the cups in the set when we are drinking from "big kid cups" but for our sippy cups we are using Klean Kanteen. I love Phillips Avent and all of their baby products, Klean Kanteen is no exception. Check out their website, it is really neat to see what their company is all about!

It is a tough tough process to go through all the plastics in the house and figure out alternative options. But, I feel it is worthwhile, especially when it comes to food storage and what is going into our bodies!
